Title: Marquis
The
Title of Marquisate Scicluna was
first created to
Emanuele Scicluna with no remainders on 1875 by Pope Pius IX, and become extinct
in 1886. The
second creation was to Emanuele and jointly to his nephew ex-fratres Guiseppe
Scicluna on the year of 1878. Emanuele
Scicluna founded the Scicluna’s Bank in 1830. The
Scicluna were leading industrialist in Malta
and financed many charitable buildings such as the “Fra Diego Institute
at Hamrun”, and many others. Guiseppe
Scicluna was a banker and financier was a noted philanthropist, a President of
the Maltese Camera Pontificia. His wife Corinne Abela-Pulis was created an O.B.E
for her humanitarian work with British Officers wounded in World War One. Emanuele
died without issue, though his nephew died in 1907, and survived by his son John
as the 2nd Marquis Scicluna. The 2nd
Marquis, John A. Scicluna was a Chairman of Simonds
Farsons Cisk Ltd and was awarded many honours in his life time. John
married into the established Nobility of Malta, marrying the 7th
Baroness of Tabria (Mary Violet Testaferrata-Moroni-Viani
(see Tabria, and Testaferrata-Moroni-Viani) They
produced two sons and two daughters, John died in 1970. The
next succeeded was John’s eldest son Joseph, who succeeded as the 3rd
Marquis, and later as the 9th Baron of Tabria
(see Tabria) after his brother ( Patrick) death in 1978. Both
brothers , dying without issue, and the title is now in abeyance. The
Second grant’s Remander was
Hereditary, with eldest male as next of kin, which would be Marcus Marshall-Scicluna
as the de-Jure Marchese Scicluna. Marcus
is the grandson of the 2nd Marquis Scicluna, and is awaiting for
approval from the Papacy to gain the Marquisate from abeyance.
