Matteo Trigona was invested by the Viceroyal of Sicily, maritali nomine, in the name of Charles 1, King of Sicily and, of Spain, V of the Holy Roman Empire on the year of 1522 , the Barony of Montagna di Marzo.

The Trigona’s can trace their ancestry back to 1239 to Ermanno Trigona.

The Trigona’s can also enjoy much connections with Nobility of Sicily and Italy, and the Royal family of Belgium.

The Trigona's held many fiefs among themselves, were Baron's of Budunetto and Vallegrande.

The Maltese connection was through the daughter of Barone Francesco Trigona and his wife Vincenza Starrabba-Calafato dei Conti di Pacchino.

Their daughter, Gerolama Trigona married in 1792 to Antonio Sceberras-Testaferrata, the 13th Baron di Castel Cicciano (see Castel Cicciano).

Antonio used the title of Baron di Montagno di Marzo in right of his wife.

Under the Sicilian law , all children were enable to succeed, In 1926, the King of Italy had changed this limiting all titles to male succession, thus meaning male to male descent only.

Since Antonio Sceberras Testaferrata, his son and his family had used the title until extinction in 1981, where it was succeeded by a member of the Sceberras family.

A younger son of the late Barone Sir Pasquale Sceberras Trigona descendant, Edwin William Sceberras Trigona, succeeded the title , then upon his death, the title went to his brother, Ronald, who is also the Baroncino di Castel Cicciano.

Barone Edwin William Sceberras Trigona’s only surviving child, his daughter Carole Ann, succeeded the title of Baroness di Castel Cicciano (see Castel Cicciano).

Ronald Frederick Sceberras Trigona, the present Barone di Montagno di Marzo has several daughters who will one day cede the title to Castel Cicciano, though the Barony will succeeded yet to another male Sceberras-Trigona ( a second cousin of the Present Barone).
