1. Man charged with Baron Sant Cassia murder received Lm6,000 for the deed

by di-ve news

VALLETTA, Malta (di-ve news)--April 11 2006 -- 1300CEST--A man charged in court with the murder of Baron Frank Sant Cassia, admitted that he received Lm6,000 for the deed.

Carmelo Camilleri, 51 of Mosta was charged in court last Saturday with the 1988 murder of Baron Frank Sant Cassia, who was shot outside his home at Castello Zamitello in Mgarr.

Mr Camilleri was also accused of firing a single shot in the direction of Baron Sant Cassia at around six in the evening on 27 October 1988, placing his life in clear danger and provoking his death.

Police inspector Chris Pullicino told a court that the accused admitted to the police that he was promised Lm11,000 for the deed but received just Lm6,000.

Mr.Pullicino said that following a tip-off, the police first brought Mr.Camilleri in for questioning in September 2004. He explained that the police received information from the late Mikiel Vella known as Il-Fixx about the involvement of the accused. When arrested, the accused had denied any involvement.

Confronted with Vella's statement, he admitted it was he who had shot Baron Sant Cassia. Mr. Camileri told the police that a carpenter working with Vassallo Group approached him to carry out the murder.

The police search for the man proved futile. The accused was re-arrested again and changed his version, saying that the man who commissioned the murder was Angelo Muscat. Having done their verifications, the police found that Mr.Muscat was questioned at the time of the murder but was released soon after, Mr. Pullicino said. This time, Muscat again denied his involvement.

The Police Inspector said that the accused's description of the scene matched exactly what the police found at the scene of the crime.

The accused said on that day, he went in front of Sant Cassia's residence with Angelo Muscat. Mr.Camilleri added that he fired a single gunshot with a firearm which was passed to him by Muscat. He added that they hid behind a rubble wall and covered the firearm in a sack.

The defence team, composed of Dr. Anglu Farrugia and Dr.Edward Gatt asked about the accused's state of mental health shortly after his arrest. Mr.Pullicino said that he was agitated which was a normal reaction given the circumstances.

He added that the accused is being kept under police custody in St.Michael's Ward at the Corradino Correctional facility.

Asked on the accused's Intelligence quotient (IQ), the police Inspector said that Mr.Camilleri's IQ was low but he is able to reason things out.

Police inspector Chris Pullicino prosecuted and Dr Anglu Farrugia appeared for the defence. The case was presided over by Magistrate Giovanni Grixti.

2. Charged with murder after eighteen years

by Chris Galea, di-ve news

VALLETTA, Malta (di-ve news)--April 08, 2006 -- 1515CEST-- Updated 1615CEST --

A 51-year-old man from has been arraigned in Court on Saturday afternoon charged with the murder of Baron Frank Sant Cassia, which case had taken place almost eighteen years ago.

Carmelo Camilleri pleaded not guilty to charges of shooting with a firearm in the direction of Baron Frank Sant Cassia and murdering him on October 27th, 1988. He was also charged with the possession of a firearm and ammunition without the Police Commissioner's license.

The Court ruled that the accused should be kept under preventive arrest.

The police managed to solve the case after years of investigations that have recently involved further observation and the questioning of a number of people.

Baron Sant Cassia had been murdered with a shot from a firearm in his head when he was 68-years-old. His body had been found behind a rubble wall close to his residence, the Zamitello Castle in Mgarr.

3. GOSSIP

Baron Sant Cassia Murder - will the Truth ever emerge?
by Anonymous on Monday, April 10 @ 03:59:48 MDT
Highly unlikely. In the last couple of days the local media gave exclusive coverage to the latest developments about the murder of the baron. A man who have allegedly admitted killing the baron have indicated the person who allegedly hired him. The allegedly self-confessed murderer also said that he was given a substantial sum of money to commit the crime. However the person he indicated as the one who commissioned the murder never had that kind of money. Neither did he have any motive to kill the baron. In fact he was released. The Times is covering the story with much interest - I have also noted that the paper is giving some information which have not appeared in the other paper's reports. For example on Sunday the Times reported "At the time, it was suspected that the murder could have been related to land ownership and transfer of large tracts of land, but this does not appear to be the case." Monday's edition also reported that "The man arrested on suspicion of commissioning the murder in 1988 of Baron Francis Sant Cassia was released yesterday after been detained for 48 hours, police sources said. Forty-eight hours is the maximum period after which police must either charge or release a suspect." Note that the reporter stresses about the 48 hour period which can imply that though the suspected man of commissioning the murder had to be released because of the 48-hours not because the police is not convinced he had nothing to do with the murder. Why is the Times so interested in telling us that the murder had nothing to do with land ownership? The fact that the Baron's son is still afraid to return to Malta from the UK and have opened a case in court where the sum of 92 million Maltese lira was quoted, is not of any interest to the Times? It also seems that the person accused with the murder is pleading insanity - which can further hamper any chances of finding the person who commissioned the murder. History showed that where there are large sums of money involved Justice does not always prevail.
